High School Reunion in North America
High School Reunion in North America
It was 9:30pm on 11/6/09. Two calls, one from Sam and the other from Yu, were missed before I answered a call from Sam, "Are you done with your working dinner? Yu is going to pick you up." I was just stepped out of the building and happily gave a positive answer to Sam. Twenty minutes after calling Yu, the two classmates met in front of a Boston hotel, shaking hands and said at the same time "Do you recognize me? Of course." The 40 some years do not seem that long and both of us were quickly brought back to the high school time.
If the conversation of three people (the Yus couple and myself) in a car toward Andover, MA, is not a scale to deserve the term "reunion", the exciting get-together of four classmates and the families of two of them, lives up to such a standard. The collective memory of the four classmates was facilitated by the admirable official CD professionally compiled by Huang Guo-Tai. The idiosyncratic life paths to the present were fueled by the time-honored cangee (thousand-year eggs and salty port) and turnip cake home-made by Xiaoping, the wife of Allen Leung. The class-song was sung, pictures were taken, stories were told, and jokes were improvised. And we were 40 some years younger again at the end of the party 5:30 am in the morning.
Lingxin's indirect observation: Andover is a suburban town in MA, where the famous private boarding high school for children of elites is situated. Allen's business is right at Andover, serving rich suburbanites. A safe prediction for his business is prosperity.
Lingxin's direct observation: My three classmates look young, energetic, and happy. Allen's house is three times of my modest home. Allen's son Brian was polite and respectful, speaking flawless English. Children of my three classmates have received or will receive college education, realizing upward intergenerational mobility.
